November 3rd and 4th brought together sixteen of Montana's chess players to fight for pride, honor, and - "Oh, yes!" - money!
First Place went to Greg Nowak, but he really had to fight for it this time. Four players were tied for the lead going into the last round. Though the prize fund was based on 20 entrants, with 16 players, Greg received 80% of $75, or $60.
Second Place went to Jim Skovron. Jim upset Jan Johansson in the second round, and held Nowak to a draw in the third round. Dennis Petrak could not make the first round, but the "Wild Bull" stomped his way into Third Place with the Swiss Gambit. [NOTE: Ask him to explain his intelligent strategy when you get a chance] Skovron and Petrak each took home $41.
Michael Stubblefield grabbed the Best 1500 - 1699 prize of $24. Mike upset Dan McCourt with a combination that was stunning!
Nick Cohea, Scott Young, and Michael Shuyler shared the Best Under 1500 prize, each winning $5.33. Nick won the Biggest Upset Prize of $15, with his win over Bill Furdell. A difference of 269 points.
We missed the Spokane players, but hope to draw them back next year. Thanks to all the Montana players who did participate!
